WHAT ARE COOKIES?
Cookies and other similar technologies such as local shared objects, flash cookies and pixels are tools used by web servers to store and retrieve information about their visitors and to ensure that sites operate correctly.
TYPES OF COOKIES
Types of cookies according to who manages them:
- Own cookies: these are cookies that are sent to a user's device from equipment or a domain managed by the owner of the website and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
- Third-party cookies: these are cookies that are sent to a user's device from equipment or a domain that is not managed by the owner of the website from which the service requested by the user is provided, but by another entity that processes the data obtained via the cookies. In addition, when cookies are installed from equipment or a domain managed by the owner of the website, but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, those cookies are also regarded as third-party cookies.
Types of cookies according to their purpose:
- Technical cookies: cookies that allow a user to browse a website, platform or application and to use the different options or services available on it, including cookies that a publisher uses to manage and operate the website and enable its functions and services, such as to monitor traffic and data communication, identify the session, access restricted areas, remember the items in an order, perform the purchase process for an order, manage payments, monitor fraud linked to the security of the service, apply for registration or participation in an event, count visits for the purposes of invoicing licences for the software on which the service (website, platform or application) operates, use security features during browsing, store content for streaming of videos or sound, enable dynamic content (for example, animation for loading a text or an image) and share content over social media.
This category also includes, due to their technical nature, cookies that make it possible to manage, as efficiently as possible, any advertising spaces included by the publisher as part of the design or layout of a website, application or platform based on criteria such as the content published. These cookies do not collect user information for other purposes, such as personalisation of advertising content and other content.
- Preference or personalisation cookies: these are cookies that allow information to be stored so that a user can access the service with features that are different to those experienced by other users, such as language, the number of search results to be shown, the appearance or content of the service depending on the type of browser the user uses to access the service and the geographical region from which the user accesses the service.
- Analysis or measurement cookies: these are cookies that allow the owner of the cookies to monitor and analyse the behaviour of users of the websites to which they are linked, including quantification of the impact of advertising. The information collected via cookies of this type is used to measure the activity on a website, application or platform to make improvements based on an analysis of data about users' use of the service.
- Behavioural advertising cookies: cookies that make it possible to manage, as efficiently as possible, the advertising spaces on a website. These cookies store information on the behaviour of users obtained via continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows user profiles to be created in order to display advertising based on a user's profile.
- Geolocation cookies: cookies used to identify where a user is located when requesting a service. These cookies are anonymous and are used, for example, to provide users with information relevant to the country in which they are based.
Types of cookies according to the length of time they remain active:
- Session cookies: these cookies are intended to collect and store data while the user is visiting a website. They are usually used to store information that is relevant only to the provision of the service requested by the user on a single occasion (for example, a list of products purchased) and disappear at the end of the session.
Persistent cookies: these are cookies in which data is stored in the user's device and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by whomever is responsible for the cookie, which can range from a few minutes to several years.
